acupuncture treatmentAcupuncture as a therapy has been used in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) for over 2000 years. The traditional Eastern approach to health has always been integrative, that is it sees mind, life and body as a WHOLE. The mind and body complex is regarded as a system and understanding the relationship between the various body systems and organs is imperative to making a diagnosis and a treatment plan. Like Ayurveda, the ancient Indian Medical science of life, the focus of TCM is on the individual as a whole rather than a particular sign or symptom in isolation. Thus in order to treat a migraine or chronic low back pain, the Acupuncturist would need to know about the patient’s overall health, his digestion, bowel habits in order to choose his treatment points.

The Concept of Qi

Qi means energy, Life – Froce, Vitality . In Chinese, Qi has different meanings depending on the context.

TCM describes Qi flowing around the body along the meridians, There are 14 main meridians that have acupuncture points. The Chinese term for meridian is jingluo and relates to two concepts. Jing refers to the familiar main meridians. Luo refers to smaller meridians that cover the entire body, like a net. In TCM, illness can be described in terms of deficiency of Qi, excess of Qi, or blockage of Qi within the meridian (jingluo) and organ (zangfu) system. Acupuncture aims to move the Qi within this system to tonify deficiency, reduce excess and clear blockages.
